The Strasbourg-Basel-Freiburg triangle features Europe’s highest concentration of museums, with 350 museums across Alsace, Germany, and Switzerland accessible through a single “Museum Pass.”

Just across the border, you can explore the Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, and the ZKM in Karlsruhe. Each year, art enthusiasts flock to Basel for Art’Basel, the world’s leading contemporary art fair. Alsace also hosts St-ART in Strasbourg, the second-largest contemporary art fair in France, showcasing around a hundred galleries and their works.
Internationally renowned stages
Alsace excels in live performance with its nationally acclaimed venues that influence the broader artistic landscape. The Théâtre National de Strasbourg is unique as one of the five national theaters situated outside Paris, alongside the Comédie-Française and the Odéon. The city is also home to notable cultural institutions such as Le Maillon, Taps, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.
The Opéra National du Rhin, renowned internationally, offers a diverse program including several original productions.

Among the most anticipated summer events is the Foire aux Vins d’Alsace, which annually features leading names in contemporary pop music. A thriving associative scene
Alsace features a highly active associative scene, with approximately 33,500 active associations as of late 2022. These organizations employ around 50,000 people in the region and benefit from strong community engagement, with nearly one million volunteer commitments each year.
The range of activities covered by these associations is extensive, including sports, culture, leisure, social action, local life, and environmental initiatives. In Strasbourg, associations receive support from the Maison des Associations, while in Mulhouse, they are assisted by the Carré des Associations.
Sports associations are particularly widespread in Alsace, with over 6,000 clubs offering opportunities in football, basketball, ice hockey, handball, and more for all ages.
Musical and artistic education
Alsace provides extensive opportunities for artistic education across all ages and skill levels.
Key institutions include:
- Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR): This encompasses the Conservatoire National de Strasbourg, the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, and the École Supérieure d’Art de Mulhouse.
